Constructed wetlands and sedimentation basins

The project aims at construction wetlands and sedimentation basins in agricultural areas in the Lake Hiidenvesi catchment area. Planning of wetlands is carried out in coorporation with local farmers, ensuring that wetlands are multipurpose and can be used e.g. as water storages, for game purposes, crayfish farming or landscape management.

The aim is to create a string of wetlands in the same creek to achieve sufficient nutrient removal level. First experiences from the River Vihtijoki area showed that it is essential to continue the general planning of wetlands also elsehwere in the catchment in order to achieve permanent results on cutting of nutrient loading.

The river basin is a valuable production area of brown trout. Therefore wetlands are planned and constructed in a natural way, enabling free fish migration.
